Now that Maebh is in school each day from 9 – noon, I have FINALLY taken on the nesting & coffee table project.
After doing loads of searching around, I found the Zinnser primer that I have been hunting to find. I picked it up at Bakers & Larners – the store in Holt of all places and it was cheaper there than Homebase, Blyth & Wright and Travis Perkins. B&Q doesn’t sell it at all. While I have said, I’d prefer not to buy from them, I couldn’t resist as I really wanted Zinnser primer.
These yellow colored wood tables are ugly and boring. So with a partly sunny day and a kids-free backyard, I set up my tables and went to town doing several coats of primer on the tables. So for now they are just white and look pretty good, but I’m sure they’ll be so much better once I determine the color(s).
I’m thinking a tone of green/blue color with a glossy shine on top. I do know that I’m so much into the distressed look so I won’t sand the edges to look warn, etc. Here are a few tables I’ve found online which give me a little inspiration. Not sure if I’ll do one color, or a variation. I even think the dotted top is cute, but not in that color. And there is the option of doing a Modge Podge top of maps of Massachusetts, The Netherlands and perhaps North Norfolk or even subway maps – could be fun for the kids.
While I was painting, I took advantage of painting the mug holders, which I use for jewelry, as I’d like to get those done soon too so I can give a couple away.
UPDATE: Saturday, 21st September. Maebh had me up at 5:30 am this morning, so as soon as it was light enough and I had enough coffee, I headed outside to paint the tables. The forecast says the next three days will be dry, so I’m going to take advantage of this weather and my one day off. I work the next three days straight.
So far so good – I LOVE the color. Only problem is that my hands are covered with blue paint which won’t come off, so I’m going to buy some white spirits asap and some latex gloves for the rest. I’m contemplating whether or not to try to put polka dots on top of the table. I think it would be super cute, but probably not with our floral couches. Speaking of couches, I still like them, but more and more each day, I think it would be better with a brown, more neutral color.
I picked the Dulux Azure Fusion 4 in a high gloss. I’m not sure if I will need to polyurethane the top, might think about it and ask my friend Barry at Homebase.
