Yesterday after work, we headed over to Sheringham to see what the Street Races were all about. I had heard they were a fun and a must see event during Carnival week. There were about 30 wheeled contraptions which raced in a couple different categories (youth and then adults). Some were just strollers, others were well thought & well designed. I didn’t get the best photos as I was not in front, so I’ll post a combination of my photos (somewhat blurry) and a few from the local paper. One thing they do here is bomb the competitors with flour bombs and water balloons. It was funny at first, but after a while, those standing by were covered too – what a mess! Had we known, we could have gotten rid of the crappy white flour in the cabinet.
There was also a waiter/waitress competition in which they had to run with a cup of water on their head and one in their hand (so clearly they’d get soaked). The first one back, with the most liquid in one cup wins.
When we arrived, we realised that we should have been there earlier as it was packed and hard to see. However, a nice family made some room for the kids to come in and see… so Soren & Maebh alternated sitting on Nils’ shoulders for a better view. After a bit, they said they were bored, so Nils took them to get a kinder egg. Meanwhile, as I waited and watched, the boy in front of me (standing next to where Soren was) had his hands on the railing, just like all the others up and down both sides. The Ape, pushing the lady in the cage, was running and his cage smashed into the fence and smashed the boy’s hand, who again was just where Soren was. It was bad, but I don’t think broken, more like very very bruised and swollen. While it was terrible, I’m SOOOO thankful it was not Soren. The paramedics were there quickly, gave him some ice packs and they took a report. Hope he is fine and it was just a bruise.
